Just Announced: globalFEST 2016 Lineup!
Every January the America’s favorite world music event takes place across three stages at New York’s Webster Hall. This January 17th, globalFEST will return for its 13th edition, as recently announced in the New York Times.
Among the acts this year are the French duo Ginkgoa and the virtuosic ensemble, Stelios Petrakis Quartet.
About Ginkgoa
She comes from New York, he lives in Paris – her name is Nicolle Rochelle, his name is Antoine Chatenet and fighting against all the odds of their geographic destiny, they have found each other. It was 2010, after four years of touring Europe with the director Jérome Savary, that Nicolle stumbled upon Antoine’s productions on the internet. Instantly upon hearing Antoine’s songs, she recognized herself within the sound and fell in love with his musical style. That very same evening they met by pure chance in a Parisian jazz club, and GINKGOA was born.
Very quickly they decided to embark on the journey of making French songs with an American vibe, and American songs with a French touch where time periods would cross and inspirations would collide: from Pop Music, to the Swing of old New York with a mix of electro beats and poetics. As a hybrid genre between Caro Emerald and Caravan Palace, they only have one idea in mind: to make generations of people dance, sway, and sing along to melodies that stay in your head long after GINKGOA has left the building.
About Stelios Petrakis Quartet
Stelios Petrakis began learning the art of the Cretan lyra at the age of eight in his hometown of Sitia. It was not long before he extended his interests to include the Greek, Turkish and Bulgarian repertoires, as well as that of Crete. Stelios Petrakis’s interests have brought him to work with a impressive list of international artists representing the Mediterranean musical traditions. He also has a lutherie workshop in Heraklion, where he makes his own instruments. His love and admiration for Cretan music led him to form the Cretan Quartet, with which he focuses on the great musical traditions of Crete, with a repertoire consisting of traditional pieces and also his own tradition-inspired compositions. The outstanding musicians of the Cretan Quartet were selected by Stelios Petrakis for their mastery of the island’s music and for their very open outlook onto the world.
